Smashed from his bicycle by an articulated truck Royston Wood found himself unable to complete a long planned for 875 mile cycling event. Battling the demons of failure he devised a plan to ride a similar distance across the UK from Land’s End to John O’Groats. With only a few days to plan the whole trip he delegated the routing to Google Maps. Cycle routing was brand new and in beta testing: what could go wrong…

Lands End to John O'Groats - End to End Cycle Route - A Safer Way

End to End Cycle Route - A Safer Way
This is a set of 18 gpx route files that use quiet roads and lanes, cycle paths, old railway lines and tow paths to guide you from one end of the country to the other. The gpx files are accompanied by a book to tell you how to use and amend them together with lists of accommodation and cycle shops and maps. It is available as a paperback or as a Kindle or pdf.  Click here or on the cover illustration for more details.

Back cover blurb:

When Royston Wood first cycled the length of the country, from John O’Groats to Land’s End, safety was not high on his agenda of concerns. He was more worried about getting through the ride in the allotted time than the traffic thundering past his shoulder. Luckily he made it, not only in time but alive.

A few years later a brush with an articulated lorry popped his bubble of invulnerability. Shortly after news hit of the death of two cyclists riding from Land’s End to John O’Groats: cycling along one of the roads he had cycled along himself.
It was at that moment that Royston decided to try and find a safer way to cycle End to End. He set out to find a route that was close to a straight line but using roads, tracks and paths that were as quiet as possible.

The resultant route is designed to be used as a set of gpx files. This book provides accompanying information such as brief route descriptions and accommodation lists, together with details on how to download the gpx files.

Praise for the books

…Beautifully written, informative, cracking sense of humour...a great read…
…Factual, funny and a page turner. I have read many books on this subject and this is one of the best…

Lands End to John O'Groats - Google Route
In 2013 (and 2014!) I rode End to End again, this time in the more traditional direction from Land's End upward.  On that occasion I was following a route spat out by Google Maps when they first started beta testing mapping for cycles.  The plan was to follow the route no matter what to see how good a job Google did. This time I took lots of notes and pictures.  I have written up the whole experience as a book that is available for download direct from this site as a pdf, .mobi or .epub file.  This gives a much greater insight into what you might expect to experience along the route.  You can access a
free sample here or by clicking on the cover image below.  (I will then send you a link, which might appear in your Junk folder) .
